Federal courts seldom dismiss cases based on the doctrine of forum non conveniens. However, on January 15, 2020, the United States District Court for the Northern District of California did just that when it dismissed a copyright infringement case filed by AP International and a group of related entities against Leo India Films, Lotus Five Star, and Arun Shanmuganathan. This case is part of an on-going business dispute between competing companies involved in the streaming of Indian and Tamil language films over the internet. The Court concluded that the case had no real connection to California and instead should have been filed in Canada, where the defendants, witnesses and documentary evidence are located. Leo India Films and the other defendants were represented in this case by Steven Williams, Winston Huff, Zac Duffy, Aynsley Young and Carrie Schadle.
